The New Graduate Certificate in Ignatian Spirituality and Synodality "It is precisely this path of Synodality which God expects of the Church of the third millennium". Pope Francis "Synodality is a way of being and a way of being Church." Pope Leo XIV Required Courses The Christian Spirituality Program is uniquely positioned to form and inform parish, diocesan and archdiocesan leaders both in the Midwest, throughout the United States, and globally on the spirituality and practice of synodality. The following 5-course progression (15 credit hours) would be offered both in-person and online throughout the year with the final course in Ignatian Discernment and Synodality required in person on the Creighton campus each summer. CSP 776: Theology of the Spiritual Exercises (3 credits) A synodal Church requires a knowledge of and practice of personal discernment. The spirituality of Ignatius of Loyola and his rules for the discernment of spirits is one method with a history of five hundred years. This course will provide the building blocks for communal discernment by teaching students how to listen to the movements of their heart. CSP 776. Discernment of Spirits: Theory and Practice. 3 credits. Study of the tradition of discernment in the Church with special emphasis on the rules for discernment of spirits in the Spiritual Exercises and the application of these to Christian life and practice. CSP 772: Foundation of Synodality in the Second Vatican Council (3 credits) The Second Vatican Council established the Church as the People of God, grounded in the Sensus Fidei, and called to be part of a mission to serve the Kingdom of God. The synodal journey we continue “constitutes a further act of reception of the Council, thus deepening its inspiration and reinvigorating its prophetic force for today’s world.” This course will explore the foundations of synodality at Vatican II. CSP 760: Ignatian Discernment and Synodality: Context, Process, Implementation This course examines the context, process, and implementation of synodality as a constitutive element of the Catholic Church. It considers the role and impact of Ignatian discernment in the practice of ecclesial synodality first introduced by Pope Francis and continued under Pope Leo XIV. CSP 718. A Theology and Spirituality of Conversion. 3 credits Freedom to respond to the grace of conversion into the likeness of the Son of God is the hallmark of Christian discipleship and the hoped for outcome of spiritual direction in general and the Spiritual Exercises in particular. To balance theory with practice we will examine Ignatius of Loyola's human and spiritual conversion. Students will apply course work to their personal growth and development so as to better prepare for the ministry of spiritual direction.
